Unfortunately, I have lost both my Dad and Grandma to Alzheimer's disease and seen many others deal with the effects in their family and friends too. This disease kills more than breast and prostate cancer combined. I volunteer and fundraise for the Alzheimer's Association to support the programs provided to those living with the disease and their caretakers. Funds also go toward valuable and much-needed research in the efforts to one day find a treatment or cure for this devastating disease.
In 1989, I lost my first husband, Mike, to skin cancer. He was just 36 years old. In 2023, my Mom also died of cancer. Two former co-workers of mine lost a child to cancer, and I know many others that, unfortunately, have had cancer or are currently battling it. One in three people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Although research and treatments have greatly improved in the past 30+ years since I lost my husband, there is still so much more work to be done to discover effective treatments and cures.
My sweet friend, Kristi, introduced me to the Compassion International organization through one of their walk experiences. The walks are an eye-opener, showing how children and their families are living in poverty. Compassion International helps children living in poverty in many countries throughout the world. Sponsoring a child includes being their pen pal and writing encouraging letters to them, surprising them with gifts on birthdays and Christmas (things we often take for granted) and being a long-distance prayer friend. The children get much-needed assistance, and most importantly, they learn of God's love through these Compassion programs.
First Stop in Huntsville, Alabama, assists the homeless with their needs and makes them more comfortable. However, even more importantly, their Case Managers work with the homeless to develop a plan, set goals and find solutions to change their situation and get them out of homelessness. Donations of clothing, toiletries and meals are always needed, with a list of "urgent needs" available on their website. It takes many volunteers to serve in various capacities.
